Process Paper
I decided to choose my project, POW Camps in Texas because I became interested in WWII prisoners of war while watching the
movie Unbroken. While my mom and I were researching and trying to find a prisoner of war from Texas that was held in Japan, I
found that there were actually prisoners of war camps in Texas. This idea interested me more so I decided to research it. I was very
surprised by the topic and so were other people. It was interesting the difference of how the Japanese treated the American
prisoners of war and how America treated German and Italian prisoners of war.
I conducted research by searching online about prisoners of war camps in Texas during WWII. I found several facilities that were
located all over Texas and in other parts of the United States. There were lots of sites that contained pictures. Some sites listed data
of all the camps and number of prisoners. Other sites had information just about certain locations. Sam Houston State University
had a site with lots of information about the camp in Huntsville. I found that the best way to research the topic was to print out the
information so that I could highlight important facts that I want to include in my final project.
I chose to create on Weebly because I am very efficient on the computer. I'd rather do my project on the computer than on a tri-
fold. I'd rather make website on the computer is than use scissor, tape and a printer. I found so many interesting pictures that I
would like to share through a website.
I feel my project connects with all three parts of the year’s history fair - Exploration, Encounter, and Exchange. A way my project
connect to the theme of exchange is because the countries that were fighting each other during WWII had to exchange prisoners for
prisoners at the end of the war. The United States encountered German and Italian soldiers in Africa during WWII and the foreign
prisoners were brought to Texas. The soldiers and those keeping them prisoners had many new encounters because of differences
in their cultures. The final theme exploration is covered because I have found this topic so interested that I am going on an
exploration of my own. The remains of the POW Camp in Hearne, Texas have been preserved and I am going to visit it to learn more
about how Texans felt having these prisoners living near them and how the POW were managed her in Texas.
